Prostate carcinoma is the most prevalent cancer among men in the Czech Republic. In 1990¬–2002, its incidence has approximately doubled. Although the increase in mortality is by far not as rapid as the upsurge in incidence, prostate carcinoma remains to be the third most frequent cause of cancer-related death among Czech men.
CAPROS project
The CAPROS project (CArcinoma – PROstate – Screening) is aimed at improvement in early detection of prostate carcinoma via monitoring in a parametric clinical registry.
The project is designed as a prospective collection of clinical data in a local database system, which would be later extended nationwide. This parametric and logically arranged system is recording not only diagnostic identification of prostate carcinoma, but also treatment advancement and results, including a detailed monitoring of complications and risk events. The results of this project will make a methodical contribution to the exact evaluation of diagnosis and treatment of patients with prostate carcinoma and will help to optimize health care.
Project objectives
The primary objective of the CAPROS project is to establish a regionally administered and validated programme of prostate carcinoma screening, starting with the model of Olomouc Region. This will be achieved by meeting the following targets:
- Creation of an on-line, centrally administered information system in order to enable the cooperation of an unlimited number of clinical centres at different organizational levels (general practitioners, diagnostic centres, hospitals, cancer centres).
- Optimization of this information system for data organization and collection, as well as for the assessment of prostate carcinoma screening (on a regional level at first):
- splitting the database and project management on screening and diagnostic/clinical portions,
- ensuring the openness of the project for interested clinical centres, as well as the possibility for other centres to participate in this project.
- Ensuring that the system runs smoothly and is stable, so that it might be extended to other regions.
- Supporting the project objectives by establishing a communication website, which would bring relevant information regarding the screening programme: standards, procedures, recommendations, results, ...
